This year Grades of Green is all about solar!

Every year our program has a different curriculum focus centered on sustainability and environmental science. With the signing of monumental state climate change legislation, it is a perfect time to discuss solar energy as an alternative to traditional carbon-based energy production. Plus, solar projects can be so much fun!

Governor Brown signed a pair of bills extending California’s plan to drastically cut carbon emissions for another 10 years. “The new legislation will significantly ramp up the state’s existing efforts to reduce emissions, including increasing the state’s reliance on solar power…SB 32 extends a 2006 law that required the state cut greenhouse gas emissions to 1990 levels by 2020. (California is currently on track to meet that goal.) Under the new legislation, California must reduce emissions to 40 percent below 1990 levels by 2030...These new goals are the most ambitious in all the US and could serve as a model for international efforts to reduce emissions.”

This Fall, students will experiment with solar car designs to optimize speed and in the Spring students will utilize solar energy for heat generation and to power everyday home appliances.
